Ok, I've been messing around lately with my jeep, got it on 4 good tires, moved it out of the back yard, etc. I've looked at this odd part many times, asking myself "What IS that thing?" Well, turns out it's a vacuum brake booster but isn't firewall mounted. See picture...

So, as you can see, I have this big, odd booster here which I have NEVER seen on any other Willys, especially one from the '40s. My jeep is on original running gears, as far as I know, but has both bumpers made of heavy steel, and has a 68 Buick V6, which I think was nicknamed the 'Fireball', so it probably has a little more weight than factory did. My problem is what you probably can't see; the booster is caving in the rusty wheel well. So, do I really need this? I'm redoing the brakes, honing the cylinders, replacing the cups, etc. and if I don't need the booster, I'll just remove it. If I DO need one, is there anything smaller, or even a master cylinder/booster that mounts under the floorboard?

I fixed the post. Turns out it wasn't necessary, nor was it functioning. I ended up taking it off and my jeep now has better brakes than it ever has. B)
