I am trying to find out how to adjust the valves on my 46 CJ2A. The manual gives a description, but it did not get specific enough. Is there a step by step method which includes clearance and crank position? Also, how do you get a torque reading on the underside nuts of the intake and exhaust manifold? It took me a couple of hours just to get them off and I am concerned about getting them back on and torqued.

Ray, I am in the process of doing my valves. Just came in from pulling the manifold. Those 2 bottom nuts are a bit difficult , but with a ratcheting box end 9/16" wrench,it took me 10 minutes each. I used a wood stick to tap against wrench handle and loosen them. At any rate, I wouldnt worry about the torquing of these lower nuts. Just get the aforementioned wrench and pull as tight as you can get them.
As I haven't actually done valves for many a year, I ll do mine and post a procedure as to how mine came out. I rebuilt the engine 10 years ago and since I have only put on 1200 miles since then,it wasn't necessary. Now,I'm getting lower compression readings and everything has settled in. I will be starting and hopefully finishing this Wednesday.

Tim
