THe old standard of Jeep since its production runs was the L-Head engine. So called because of its valve configuration,it proved to be a dependable,if unspectacular power plant. The following are its specifications. Used in the MB,GPW,CJ2A,CJ3A and Early trucks and wagons. From about 1947 until 1955, the slightly modified L-Head was used in the Pickup and Wagons. It had a different carburetor (Carter 626 1 barrel) and has an inproved compression ratio*.

Please don't forget the L-134 was used in all DJ3A Jeeps built 1955 to 1965. Many engines were sold as Service Parts for replacement engines over dealership parts counters and there were scads of industrial uses, such as welders, generators etc. We are trying to build a DJ3A Production Chart and include as many Engine Numbers as possible. So far it looks like the earliest DJ3A engine Number I can document in an actual DJ3A is 3J162503 used in a 1959 built unit. We know that at least 5000+ DJ3A's were built prior to this one as well as all L-134's used for other purposes. So generally we can say that there are many blocks numbered higher than the last CJ3A built in 1953. If you have a block numbered in the range 3J157500 to the highest one I have recorded 3J175519 which is in a Jan. 1964 built DJ3A,please email me and tell me what the use for the engine is today. The number is stamped just behind the water pump on a flat surface. Be careful here. NO WIRE BRUSHES. Use WD-40 and a toothbrush, Don't hurry. Several applications should bring it up.
