It appears that the spacer was used to compensate for a slightly bent pivot arm. I measured the offset of the left side arm from the w/s frame edge and compared that to the same measurement made on the right side and found that the left side offset was one-eighth inch more than the right side offset, thus the spacer requirement. Both brackets hold the pivot arm an equal distance off the cowl and have the same mounting hole dimensions, so the only difference I can find is the slightly different shape.
So, can anyone confirm for me which is the actual 3A part and, would it be advisable to attempt to restore the pivot arm bend to original spec? At this point I'm shooting for getting the Jeep as close as I can back to original condition, but if keeping the spacer with the bracket is not too great a transgression , especially if it avoids a tricky/risky straightening attempt, I'd go with that.
