I just bought my 1963 willys cj5 couple weeks ago and i heard the steering knuckle is supposed to have a special lubricant. is this true? and if so what do i use?Attached File  IMAG0243.jpg (654.35K)

Scott; There are several schools of thought on this and most service manuals don't make it clear. Some folks use grease pumped through the plug,others use a 90- 130 weight oil to completely immerse the u joints ( same for steering gear) I , as do others,use a combination mix. If you tear one apart,you will see that grease alone will not do the job. The grease somewhat prevents the oil from leaking around the seals. Of course,if you have new felt seals,oil alone should be sufficient. That is how I would approach it. Keep the backside of the knuckle housing clean so that when it is wiped by the seals, they remain in good shape. Many recommend against synthetic blends as they can break down the old seals.
