A year ago my friend purchased a pile of parts to a Willys jeep. I let him pile it in my garage where it set until I talked im into letting me have buy it from him. So now it is my pile of parts. The chassis is complete and reworked, the engine block was done and put back together and the heads are somewhat put together. I have been reading through the military assembly manuals getting an idea of how to put it together.

Now that is out of the way I will get to my question. From research I have done online I noticed that the L-134 flathead 4 has a flatter looking top to the head than mine. The spark plugs on mine come in the side of the head, intake valve is on the bottom of the head and the valve rail is on top. The valve cover is small in width and long contouring around each rocker arm somewhat. Everything else looks pretty common on all Willys motors I have seen. On the fenders the ones on this jeep are not flat, but more closely resemble those on a CJ.

I know this isn't much information to go on, but if anyone could help tell me what numbers to look for where that designate what model or year I would truly appreciate it. I need to figure out what I have in order to buy parts for the motor.

Thanks

Hi. Sounds like you have an F-Head engine which is the replacement for the L Head. Its still a 134, they just changed the valves to overhead which necessitated the plugs to be placed on the side. This engine was produced for 20 some years and you will have no problem finding parts for it.

Thanks Tim, you confirmed what I was thinking. Always good to ask before you go buying parts for it. If the entire jeep wasn't in pieces it may be easier to identify.

With more research I have discovered the jeep is an M38A1 with the hurricane f-head 134. I have looked it over and found some missing parts already.
Crankcase upper and lower vents are absent
thermostat cap/housing is missing.

Any suggestions on websites to locate such parts?

G503.com is your best bet, it is a military jeep website with a M38 section....second best would be some of the guys on the early cj5 forums, as your jeep has a lot in common with a Cj5. Suppliers....Midwest Willys, Kaiser WIllys, Walcks, etc..
