I have a 1950 CJ3A with very soft brakes. Can someone tell me the best way to remove the master cylander plug ? I removed the floor plate, but I'm not sure how to get at the plug.

You are on the right track. It takes a socket with extension bar or cold chisel and hammer to break it loose. You might break it apart, but new caps are available. They often corrode and stick really well! Once removed, bleed brakes beginning with right rear(furthest away) The front left have a tendency to grab as they are closest to master cylinder. You might have to adjust shoes "open"to avoid grab.

Speaking of brakes, I've got a 52 CJ3A with no brakes as well. I noticed a brake fluid leak at the front right wheel and pulled the wheel cylinder to find all of the rubber completely disolved. Any recommendations on the appropriate brake fluid to use when I refill the system?

Plain old DOT 3 out of new bottle. Once you change out the wheel cylinder, you'll need to bleed the brakes well. You also probably need to replce the curly cue piece of brake line after you break it taking it off of the wheel cylinder.
